What is meant by Sin?
Sin is defined as an immoral act that is a transgression against divine law. It is an offense against the religious or moral code and it refers to actions that are strictly condemned.
Each culture and religion has various interpretations of what a sin is.
In Hinduism, murder, stealing and drinking alcohol are considered the greatest sins. Keeping company with sinners is also regarded as a sinful act.
Killing, matricide, patricide and creating schism in a society are considered grave sins in Buddhism.
Witchcraft, shirk, leaving off the five daily prayers are some of the sins mentioned in Islam.
Christianity, however, talks about seven deadly sins.
Seven deadly sins in Christianity
The seven deadly sins in Christianity are as follows:
- Pride- Pride refers to boastfulness where an individual considers themselves superior and thinks very highly of themselves. Humility is the cure of pride.
- Greed- Greed is the excessive desire or longing for materialistic wealth. People should always pursue charity over greed as preached by the Bible.
- Gluttony – Gluttony refers to excess eating of food or over- drinking. People should always choose temperance over gluttony so that they can be healthy and fit to serve others.
- Lust- Lust refers to strong passion or excessive sexual desires. Chastity helps people stay in self- control and overcome desires of lust.
- Wrath- Wrath refers to intense anger or a strong feeling of hatred towards another person. The Bible directs its followers to be patient with someone and understand their needs before voicing one’s own viewpoint.
- Envy- Envy refers to intense jealousy and the extreme desire to possess something or some trait that someone else does. Christianity preaches that kindness is the cure to envy and an individual should consider themselves blessed with whatever God has provided them.
- Sloth- Sloth means laziness and failure in pursuing one’s duties or in utilising one’s time effectively. The Bible says that diligence or zeal is the cure of sloth.
Will God bless a sinful relationship?
The basic principles of Christianity preach that God will not bless you if you ‘ choose’ to sin continually without making any effort to repent or correct your sins.
If an individual purposely disobeys the commandments of the Lord and trods on the path of sin, he isn’t worthy of God’s blessing as proclaimed by the priests.
There are various ways how sin in a relationship can be interpreted. Indulging in a physical relationship before marriage is considered a sin by some. Adultery is another type of sin. Some even consider the act of second marriage as a sin.
However many people in present times have disregarded such beliefs and have considered them orthodox.
Some people think that a sinful relationship will never receive the blessings of the Lord. Although this statement is open to debate and people might have different opinions on this, some people refuse to believe that God won’t bless a sinful relationship.
As it is always preached, the Lord is ever forgiving. If someone repents for their sins and chooses to trod on the path of God’s commandments, he will surely receive blessings from the Lord.
No matter what sin has been committed, if the relationship is surrendered to the Holy Spirit, God will surely provide the couple with a path that will bring glory to His name. Every repentance requires dealing with past, however, they must not dwell on it and move forward following God’s commandments.
